Reflection on 9-7-2011

Maggie Yam (4S)

Today we went sight-seeing in London. First, we walked along St. James’ Park, then stopped and had our lunch. The weather was very fine and the scenery is superb. We had the chance to sit on the grass and enjoy our lunch to feel the nature. It is really a good experience for us Hong Kong students.

After that, we continued our sight-seeing in central London. We went to the national Gallery, Big Ben and the London Eye. We went to the Big Ben on foot, so that we wont miss the beautiful sites in London. However, there were so many people on the street and it was very difficult for us to cross the road as there were about 60 students in our group. We had to follow our mentors; instructions or else we would get lost. While we were crossing the road, 11 of us got lost. Fortunately, our senior residential assistant, Gerard was with them, therefore we were able to find them in a couple of minutes. We learnt to be co-operate with our mentors when walking and crossing roads in crowded areas as they are in charge of our society.

With the support by our mentors and classmates, we finished our journey and finally arrived at our hall. Though we had walked for the whole day and felt exhausted, we really had a great day.

We went sight-seeing for the whole day on Saturday. In the morning, we gathered to have our breakfast and did some laundry. This was the first time for us to use the washing machine and it was easier than expected!

We gathered again for the preparation of the sight-seeing. After that, we started off. We first passed through the St James Park and reached the Buckingham Palace. We had taken a lot of photos there because the building was very grand and very beautiful.

After visiting the Buckingham Palace, we went to the National Gallery and we saw the countdown board of the London Olympics that will be held in 2012

After that, we visited the Big Ben and the London Eye. Luckily when we arrived at the Big Ben, it was 4 o’clock, and so we could experience the 4 bell sounds.

Although, we had walked for a long time, around 4 hours, and all of us were very tired, we had undoubtedly experienced a lot and sight-seeing a lot. This experience is indeed unique!

Today we had a very relaxing morning, but then we had a tight afternoon, we went around Central London for sightseeing. Instead of taking a bus or the tube, we walked for the whole journey.

Firstly, we went to the Buckingham Palace. We were impressed by the size and architecture of the palace. After that, as we had ordered sandwiches beforehand, we ate our lunch in St. Jame’s Park was really great and large, we saw people feeding ducks and squirrels climbing around. Then, we visited the Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben and the National Gallery.

The city was crowded with many tourists; we had a hard time staying together as a group. When we were going to Big Ben, some members from other group were separated from their mentors. Our group was proud that we didn’t get lost and walked as a team for the whole journey. Even our mentors praised our team spirit, and we got chocolate as treats.

We walked for more than three hours today, we were extremely tired.

Today we went sightseeing. It was very interesting as it was the first time we walked to many tourist spot.

We went to places like the Trafalgar Square and saw Nelson’s column, Westminster and Westminster Abbey. We also saw the London Eye when we reached the Big Ben, it chimed four times which signifies that it was four o’clock in the afternoon.

We walked a total of five hours! So, we were definitely physically exhausted by the end of outing. This was a very new-and-tiring-experience as we don’t even walk this much in a month in Hong Kong.

Today was a tiring day. Firstly, we walked past Hyde Park. Hyde Park is a famous park in London and it is extremely big. We saw people doing different activities there. Some were playing football and some were reading books. If we had more time, we would like to sit down comfortably on the grass. After that, we ate lunch on the lawn of St. James Park. It was an interesting experience because there are not much suitable sites for picnic in Hong Kong. We also saw a pond with many ducky. It was amazing. Thirdly, we went to see the front gate of Buckingham Palace. It was gorgeous and when we were going to the Palace, we saw coaches with people wearing formal clothes riding on a coach too. Next, we went to Trafalgar Square. The view of Trafalgar Square was awesome and I would like to visit the National Art Gallery if we had time. After visiting the Trafalgar Square, we went to Westminster. We saw the Big Ben, London Eye and the Westminster Church. At night, we went to a Japanese restaurant and most of us ordered the chicken curry but it was too spicy. In conclusion, we walked for almost 6 hours this day and it was surely an unforgettable experience.

It has been a very tiring day. We did the laundry in the morning and then picked up our lunch. Then we headed off to the downtown for sight-seeing. It was a long walk through the Hyde Park, but we enjoyed the view along the way. We took about an hour before we reached the Buckingham Palace, which was our first stop. We stayed there for a while and then had picnic at St James Park. After that, we went to Trafalgar Square. We took a lot of pictures in front of the National Museum and the huge countdown timer for the 2012 Olympic Games. After our vote, we decided to go sight-seeing at the London Eye and Big Ben. However, there were a lot of people around, so we left soon after we took some pictures. At night, we went to a Japanese restaurant, Wagamama, for dinner. Even though the food does not taste very “Japanese”, they were of very high quality. We all enjoyed our dishes very much and had a great time there.

We have walked for 6 hours today and we were all extremely exhausted. Although we have been mourning all the way back, everyone persisted and we all reached our dorms on time. After today’s outing, we understand that persisting is very important to our lives. Being persisting, can really help us reach higher goals in the future.

Today is an off-campus day and we all enjoyed it a lot. The assemble time this morning was 9:15am so all of us have had enough sleep. We had sandwiches for lunch in the St. James's Park. The park is huge and there is a large lawn with a lot of trees next to it. We all felt very delighted to be in such a beautiful and natural environment since such a large park with so many trees is very rare in Hong Kong. We also saw a squirrel and took many photos of it. After lunch, we walked to the Buckingham Palace, where the Queen lives in. In addition, we saw the royal family on the horse carriages. We then walked to Westminster and saw the Big Ben and the London Eye. The weather was also very nice.

This is absolutely an experience that I will never forget as it is the first time for me to see these famous landmarks of London. We walked for the whole day and that was very tiring but it was worth it because we have experienced so much new things. We learnt a lot about the history of England. Lastly, we have learned from this off-campus experience that we should stay close to each other as a group so that no one would get lost. In conclusion, it was a fantastic day and we all loved it.

Today I had a fabulous birthday. In the morning, one of my friends knocked on the door of my room. When I came out, many friends suddenly came out from their rooms and sang “Happy Birthday” to me. It was a great surprise. I was really happy and touched as this was the first time to have so many friends celebrating my birthday with me.

We had some sight-seeing activities today. We walked from imperial College to central London. We went to the bucking ham Palace, the Big Ben and the London Eye. Central London was really crowded and our mentors walked very quickly so it was quite difficult for us to follow them in order not to get lost in the crowd. We walked for several hours and were very tired when we were walking back to the campus. However, a few of my friends and I were still able to follow Gerald at the front of the queue. We were very proud of us for this.

Although it was an exhausting day, we got to see the beautiful sites in London and we had lots of fun.
